Peek Inside a Book - The Godfather

When I was deciding to come back to the blog I was looking through all the blogging memes that the blogs I read follow. I had done Book Beginnings and The Friday 56 a handful of times, but over at Mixed Book Bag, JC merged them together and I really like that idea.  So borrowing from her I'm going to start linking up to both Book Beginnings on Friday from Rose City Reader and The Friday 56 with Freda's Voice.

About a month ago I got into a Twitter discussion about The Godfather. We were discussing how great both the book and the movie were. This conversation revealed that one of the participants hadn't read the novel.  It has been a number of years since I read the novel and here I was saying how great it was. I wanted to reread it to make sure I had my suggestions right.

This week the book The Godfather by Mario Puzo caught my eye.

239795
It Begins:
Amerigo Bonasera sat in New York Criminal Court Number 3 and waited for justice; vengeance on the men who had so cruelly hurt his daughter, who had tried to dishonor her.

On Page 56:
So Hagen started again, speaking in the most ordinary voice. "Look at my card," he said. "I'm a lawyer. Would I stick my neck out? Have I uttered one threatening word? Let me just say that I am prepared to meet any condition you name to get Johnny Fontane that movie."

Verdict:
Well, if you know the movie or the story you know that this Hagen speech only does so much good. The man Hagen is talking to, Jack Woltz, gets a rude awakening a little later in the story.  I'm not that far into reading the novel but I'm enjoying it and yes I still think the novel and the movie are both excelent.

Peek Inside a Book - Come Sundown

When I was deciding to come back to the blog I was looking through all the blogging memes that the blogs I read follow. I had done Book Beginnings and The Friday 56 a handful of times, but over at Mixed Book Bag, JC merged them together and I really like that idea.  So borrowing from her I'm going to start linking up to both Book Beginnings on Friday from Rose City Reader and The Friday 56 with Freda's Voice.

This week the book Come Sundown by Nora Roberts is my current read.

Come Sundown
It Begins:
Prologue
- Western Montana, 1991 -

Alice Bodine relieved herself behind a thin screen of lodgepole pines.

On Page 56:
He had the novices on a couple of reliable hacks - though the bay they called Biff could be as lazy as a teenage boy on a summer morning. He plodded along under the man while the nervous giggle rode the cooperative Maybelle.

Verdict:
This novel is broken down into four parts. I'm about halfway through the second part and enjoying the story. I've already got my suspicions about things, but knowing Nora I can't be sure if I'm right or not and probably will find out when she tells us.

She paints such a great picture, I miss my brief time in Montana!

It's Monday! What are you reading? - July 10, 2017

This was a slow reading week. I'm plodding along with Princes at War and hoping to finish it up soon. I had a week off from listening to One Summer because my digital checkout through the library expired and I had to wait for another copy to become available so I could pick it back up.

Currently Reading:

Title: Princes at War: The Bitter Battle Inside Britain's Royal FAmily in the Darkest Days of WWII
Author: Deborah Cadbury
Date Started: June 22, 2017
Note: Reading this on my lunch breaks so it's slow going.

Title: All He Needs
Author: Shirley Hailstock
Date Started: July 9, 2017

Currently Listening:

Title: One Summer: America, 1927
Author: Bill Bryson
Date Started: June 18, 2017

Finished Reading:

TitleEmpty Places
Author: Richard Parks
Date Finished: July 5, 2017
Note: LeVar Burton Reads Podcast. 2 parts

Title: Audubon, On The Wings Of The World
Author: Fabien Grolleau
Date Finished: July 8, 2017
Note: Loved the artwork, wasn't thrilled with the pace of the story. Also it always makes me a bit sad to know that while Audubon loved animals he killed so many birds to make his prints.

Peek Inside a Book - beachcombers

When I was deciding to come back to the blog I was looking through all the blogging memes that the blogs I read follow. I had done Book Beginnings and The Friday 56 a handful of times, but over at Mixed Book Bag, JC merged them together and I really like that idea.  So borrowing from her I'm going to start linking up to both Book Beginnings on Friday from Rose City Reader and The Friday 56 with Freda's Voice.

My little twist to this; I work in a library IT department. We have two offices separated by a section of the fiction stacks.  Books are always catching my eye and I've gotten pretty good at ignoring them, otherwise, my TBR list would be HUGE.  But these weekly memes give them the chance to see if the book would be worth checking out.

This week the book beachcombers by Nancy Thayer caught my eye. It was on a display with a sign that was a picture of a beach with the world 'escape' on it. Nancy Thayer is like the queen of beach reads so the display had a number of her books and I just randomly picked this one. I might be checking this one out on my way out of the library today!

7010683
It Begins:
"Look," their mother said to them.
It' was late October, and Danielle had brought her daughters to Surfside, the beach that faced, unprotected by bulkhead or harbor or jetties, the immense sweep of the Atlantic Ocean.

On Page 56:
Jim introduced her to everyone. "This is Marina Warren. She's from Kansas City. She's renting our cottage for the summer and she wants to learn all about the island."

Summary:
Abbie Fox hasn’t seen her father or two younger sisters in almost two years. But now Lily, the baby of the family, is sending Abbie urgent emails begging her to return home. Their middle sister, Emma, has taken to her bed, devastated after losing her high-powered job and breaking up with her fiancĂ©. Also, Lily is worried that the beautiful, enigmatic woman renting their guesthouse has set her sights on their widowed father. The Fox sisters closed ranks years ago after the haunting, untimely death of their mother, but seeing their dad move on with his life forces each of them to take stock.

Over the course of the summer, the sisters’ lives grow as turbulent as the unpredictable currents off the New England coast: Abbie breaks her own rules in the name of love, type-A Emma learns a new definition of success, and strong-minded Lily must reconcile her dreams with reality. At summer’s end, these unforgettable women will face profound choices—and undergo personal transformations that will surprise even themselves.
