As of this morning I am 2 books behind schedule in my GoodReads Reaching Challenge. I knocked out some romance books on my list this weekend, but needed to get going on this month's library book club selection The Golem and the Jinni. I remember when this book came out, it was pretty popular at the library, but it never struck me as something I'd want to read. I'm only a few chapters into the book, but I like the writing style and so far I'm enjoying the story.
Currently Reading:
Title: The Golem and the Jinni
Author: Helene Wecker
Date Started: June 10
Goodreads Summary:
In The Golem and the Jinni, a chance meeting between mythical beings takes readers on a dazzling journey through cultures in turn-of-the-century New York.
Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic and dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899.
Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert, trapped in an old copper flask, and released in New York City, though still not entirely free.
Ahmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable, Helene Wecker's debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale.

The Golem and the Jinny was a wonderful audiobook! I think I would like it in print, too. My book club would be mad at me for selecting a book that long, I think, although we did read A Gentleman in Moscow!
ReplyDeleteYea it's a big one, thankfully we know the books for the year ahead of time so I was able to adjust the rest of my reading so I would have time to read this one.
DeleteThanks for stopping by.
Two books behind isn’t much at all :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you continue to enjoy The Golem and the Ginny
Have a great reading week
No, thankfully it wasn't. I still probably won't make my goal, but one day, I'll hit that number again.
