55 Flash Fiction Friday - The Text Message

This meme is hosted by  Mr. Knowitall . Just spent 15 mins on the phone explaining how I just know a text about winning a million bucks at random is fake. #librarianproblems — b cote (@nojustbeth) February 21, 2014 So I was trying to figure out what to write for today's Flash Fiction Friday and was coming up blank.  Then I saw the above Tweet show up in list for #librarianproblems and knew right away what I would write! “Hi how can I help you?” “I won some money and I need to go online to fill out the paper work to claim the money. Can you help me?” “Ok what’s the web address?” She hands me her phone and I read the text message. “This is a scam.” “But it says I won!”

55 Flash Fiction Friday (on Tuesday!) - Whiskey

This meme is hosted by  Mr. Knowitall . In honor of Valentine's Day I paired down a poem I wrote in college.  So here is the shorter version of Whiskey I remember my first shot of whiskey Just like I remember our first kiss My whole system is affected by it My mouth goes numb and Everything tastes weaker after It’s a taste that can never be forgotten  I’m haunted by our last kiss I swore never shoot whiskey again But I crave the burn Tomorrow I'll post the whole poem.

55 Flash Fiction Friday - Dinosaurs

This meme is hosted by  Mr. Knowitall . Okay so this is a day later than I had wanted to post it, but I couldn't get my wording quite right.  This is a story that is loosly (very loosely) based on fact. I did question the existance of dinosaurs in the bible, and I was told it was the 'beasts' mention in the creation story and I do have a great uncle we call Uncle Father. Besides all that, completely made up! “But where are the dinosaurs?” She clutched the stuffed raptor to her chest. “Right here niña.” Tío Padre pointed to the passage he just read. “God created the beasts of the earth, sea, and air.” “Does it say why God killed the dinosaurs?” Tío Padre chuckled, “No niña, God doesn’t have to explain his actions.”

55 Flash Fiction Friday - Reference Question

This meme is hosted by  Mr. Knowitall . My desk. We have a patron who comes into the library nearly everyday.  He loves to watch Jeopardy and when he discovered the Clue of the Day in the NYTimes he was thrilled.  He believes that he tricks his wife that he knows the answer to Final Jeopardy or what every clue it happens to be in that day's broadcast.  Reference Question “Good morning ladies.” Nearly every day he comes to the reference desk, a folded section of The New York Times in his hand. “I think it’s …” he’ll share his answer. More often than not he’s not even close. I take the paper and start my research to answer the Jeopardy Clue of the Day.

55 Flash Fiction Friday - Holiday Recovery

This meme is hosted by Mr. Knowitall . From my Instagram Christmas morning passed in a blur. All too soon the gifts had been opened, oohs and aahs had been expressed, and breakfast had been consumed.  Now it was hours before anyone had anywhere to be and the humans were sitting at the table playing cards.  We didn’t have to supervise anymore so we napped.

55 Flash Fiction Friday - Christmas Eve Discovery

This meme is hosted by Mr. Knowitall . Today's story is true. When we were younger my brother and I used to cuddle up in one bed in anticipation of Christmas Morning. We were always very excited and could hardly sleep.  Then one year as we lay there we heard my mom watching her soaps, which wasn't unusual. What was unusual was the sounds of gifts being wrapped.  Christmas Eve Discovery Cuddled in bed, too excited to sleep, a brother and sister lay awake talking about what they expect to find Christmas morning. Then they hear the TV come on with Mom’s favorite soap opera, and the sounds of gifts being wrapped. But all the gifts from Mom and Dad are already under the tree!

55 Flash Fiction Friday - Day Off

This meme is hosted by Mr. Knowitall . This is a 55 Fiction I wrote back in college as part of my creative writing class. Dallas Swat’s Day Off “What’s wrong?” She asked groggily waking from a sound sleep. “It’s work I have to go in. Sorry.” He climbs out of bed looking at his pager. “You know I understand. I feel bad for you it was your day off.” She sits up watching him get dressed. He kisses her. “Be safe.”
