I loved Amelia Bedelia when I was a child and I'm pretty sure I read all of Peggy Parish's books in the original series.
I think Peggy's focus on misunderstanding figures of speech is great fun as a child, but it is also teaching kids a lesson. It's one of those times that you are learning something while having fun. It's a lesson on taking things too literally.
When I still thought I'd want to be a teacher we had to write a lesson plan on teaching a book. I chose Amelia Bedelia and focused on figures of speech. My class loved the idea and I got good praise for the other pre-teachers.
I really hope her books live on with new readers and with her nephew's continuing authorship.
